Even before the mission house was opened in Steyl on September 8, 1875, Arnold Janssen had thought of opening a house in Rome.
He was already thinking that the Society’s main house should be in Rome because of a concern to avoid the danger of a pronounced nationalism in the new institution. So there were important considerations for the creation of the Collegio in Rome: one was the outgrowing a narrow nationalism and another was creating a meeting place for all the countries in the Society.
Another reason to have a house in Rome was to have a place for the students, future professors of philosophy, and theology of the many candidates in St Gabriel mission seminary.
