In Their Own Words, n8. Forth they went… Pioneers of the first SSpS Missions

Author: Compilation and Translation: Jacqueline Mulberge, SSpS
Subject: Letters, Chronicles, Mission
Language: English
Publisher: Rome, SSpS Publications
Year: 1998
Available in .pdf

The publication contains excerpts from letters, chronicles and travel journals of SSpS sisters written between 1895 and 1900. The foundations in Argentina, Togo and New Guinea were made during the lifetime of Bl. Maria Helena Stollenwerk. We can learn more about sisters’ preparation for a mission, about their travelling that time, about busy life since their arrival to a new country and adjustments to new situations. The texts give us some impression of what the pioneers faced and how they coped. These sisters, especially the pioneers in Argentina, relayed their experiences and discoveries back to the Mother House, providing the information necessary to prepare others for mission work. The pioneer SVD and SSpS were the only sources of this information for Arnold Janssen and the co-founding generation. Hopefully, these texts will also be an inspiration and encouragement for our mission task today.
