Way of the Cross for Peace

Way of the Cross
Way of the Cross, Cali, Colombia
OPENING PRAYER

Leader (L): In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

R/: Amen.

L: Redeemer Jesus, lead us along the way of peace. Show us how we can turn aside thoughts and actions that lead to fights and arguments. Help us to choose, instead, to work and play together in peace. As we walk this way of the cross for peace and look on your mild and gentle goodness, move our minds and hearts to become peacemakers in our every word and deed.

  1. JESUS IS CONDEMNED TO DEATH.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer.  R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: We often judge others to make ourselves feel more important or worthy in some way. Let us not judge others as unacceptable, foolish, or stupid.

R/: Jesus, lift from our minds and hearts the temptation to label and judge others. May we accept all people as who they are, not who we think they are or who others think they are. We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. JESUS ACCEPTS HIS CROSS.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer.  R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: God did not make one kind of human being. Every person is unique. Let us accept differences, even when— perhaps especially when—the differences of others make us uncomfortable.

R/: Jesus, open our minds and hearts to accept the differences of others. May “he/she is just different” be a statement of respect and not ridicule. We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. JESUS FALLS THE FIRST TIME.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer.  R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: When we hang on to our wrongs and refuse to forgive, we stray from the way of peace. Forgiveness gives peace a chance. Let us forgive.

R/: Jesus, draw our minds and hearts toward forgiveness. Your grace will show us the way.  We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. JESUS MEETS HIS BLESSED MOTHER.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer.  R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: We follow the way of peace when we treat others with care and kindness. Let us respect the pain and heartache of all people—for everyone hurts or suffers in some way.

R/: Jesus, form our minds and hearts to be aware of all the suffering in the world. Everyone we meet needs the peace we can offer.  We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. SIMON OF CYRENE HELPS JESUS.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer. R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: The peace in our own hearts becomes strong when we help others have the basic things in life like food and shelter. Let us serve with charity.

R/: Jesus, remove from our minds and hearts all fears and judgments that keep us from reaching out to others. If for sure we are your disciples, we serve. We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. VERONICA WIPES THE FACE OF JESUS.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer. R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: To offer a helping hand, a wave, a handshake, or a pat on the back is to make that moment a simple gift of peace. Let us extend our hands in peace—literally.

R/: Jesus, teach our minds and hearts nonviolent ways of resolving differences. A simple gesture can end a conflict before it begins. We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. JESUS FALLS THE SECOND TIME.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer. R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: Forgiveness turns a war cry into a peace cry. Let us forgive again and again.

R/: Jesus, stretch our minds and hearts so that we begin to understand the power of forgiveness. Forgiveness can turn a battle field into a peace field.  We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. JESUS MEETS THE HOLY WOMEN OF JERUSALEM.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer. R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: Although our ears may hear only offense, our hearts can hear a plea for help or an offer of friendship. Let us listen with heart

R/: Jesus, sharpen our minds and hearts to listen for what is said beyond the spoken word. May we not take offense at what we hear and thus miss an opportunity to offer a word or gesture of peace. We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. JESUS FALLS A THIRD TIME.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer. R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: From the cross, Jesus forgives his tormentors. Such forgiveness is possible only through the grace of God— which is ours. Let us forgive again and again and again.

R/: Jesus, touch our minds and hearts with the grace that brings peace. This very day, with your grace, we are willing to make peace through forgiveness.  We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS.

L: We follow you, Jesus Redeemer. R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: To be humble is not to be a wuss. Rather, to be humble is to apologize when we are wrong; to make things right, if possible, when we’ve made a mistake; to make amends—no matter what. Let us be humble.

R/: Jesus, strip our minds and hearts of prideful attitudes. Help us to admit our shortcomings. May we humbly and simply offer peace. We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer. R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: Peacemakers get involved. They don’t look on from the side-lines. They make a difference. Let us learn about peace-making efforts in our own neighbourhoods and around the world.

R/: Jesus, guide our minds and hearts in our search for others with whom we can walk the way of peace and make a difference. We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer. R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence.

L: The media portrays thousands of acts of violence and death every day. These images lure us toward taking lightly the loss of life in acts of violence. Let us respect death.

R/: Jesus, may our minds and hearts always be upset with images of violent death. In work and play, give us the courage to choose peace and life. We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. JESUS’ BODY IS TAKEN DOWN FROM THE CROSS.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer. R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: When peace has been destroyed, reaching out with kindness and compassion will begin the peace-building process. Let us make healing possible.

R/: Jesus, help our minds and hearts to be hopeful so that we are never discouraged. We can always do something to help restore peace. We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

  1. JESUS’ BODY IS PLACED IN THE TOMB.

L: Lead us, Jesus Redeemer. R/: Along the way of peace.

Silence

L: Our own hearts and the hearts of others will grow peaceful as a result of our daily prayers for peace. Let us pray for peace. Let us invite others to pray for peace.

R/: Jesus, use our minds and hearts to spread peace in our families, among our friends, in our communities, and around the world. Peace starts here—in our own hearts.  We Pray: “Peace be with you. Peace be with me.”

CLOSING PRAYER

L: Gentle Jesus, we look back on the way we have just travelled. Walking the way of your suffering and death, we see a love so perfect and complete that it made possible our eternal life. As your disciples, with the help of your grace, may we become peacemakers, today and every day, and always.

R/: Amen.

Redeemer Jesus, lead us along the way of peace!
