In his Apostolic Letter in the form of a Motu Proprio, “Aperuit Illis”, Pope Francis asks that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time be especially dedicated to the celebration, reflection, and proclaiming of the Word of God. It is his intention and desire “to make the Church relive the gesture of the Risen Lord who opens for us to the treasure of his Word so that we can proclaim throughout the world this inexhaustible richness”.
The following prayer ‘Encountering the Word of God’ may help us in our reflection on the value and importance of the Word of God in our lives.
Help us to find the way, Good Father, bring us closer to your Spirit of Life, that changes the heart and is able to change from within.
Teach us to discern your will from your Word; to discover your plan of life, to find the hidden treasure, for which it is worthwhile to leave everything and set life in motion.
May every encounter with your Word be a profound encounter with your living presence.
May the reading of each biblical text be the echo where your voice resounds, inviting us to follow you, calling us to conversion, announcing new life, for all those who wish to follow in your footsteps and live according to your will.
Give us a critical glance, Lord, that we may be capable of discovering in the events we live the traces of your Kingdom.
Teach us to live in community so that we may learn together to meet you in the Bible and in life, in the Gospel and in the people, in the Word, and in our history.
May your Word convert us, Lord, and renew us.
May it change our gaze, may it encourage us to take the step that will make us strong in our faith and courageous in our witness.
May we preach and proclaim your Word with our daily example of life.
May we seek your choices, may we convert ourselves to your preferences, may we accompany your chosen ones.
Father, give us a new heart, a heart like yours, full of compassion and faithfulness, slow to anger and rich in mercy and justice.
May we build biblical communities, true seeds of the new world; Schools where we learn the paths that lead to God, the windows that give way to the Spirit, mirrors where to find the reflection of your will and your presence for all.
Convert us, Father, that our daily encounter with your Word, may become the crucible that purifies our image of God to find and surprise us with the true one, which we never finish knowing.
Give us a thirst for your Word, give us a hunger for justice, give us a need for permanent conversion, Lord, good God of Life. Amen.
