In the writings of Arnold Janssen and the co-Foundresses of the Servants of the Holy Spirit, we frequently come across the expression “the good spirit”. It is the “religious” spirit or spirit of religious life. The main emphasis is on fraternal/sisterly love and seeking to follow God’s will. Still, it also includes fidelity, the practice of virtue, observance of the vows, all of which can only be achieved through constant prayer. It is the spirit of striving for the perfection of the Christian life within a religious community. Our founding generation grew up with a hierarchically ordered, static worldview, but they had to respond to the evangelical needs of the world. Our Founding generation’s letters allow us to see their sense of responsibility for their members whom they wished above all to help in a spiritual sense; they did this by stressing the Constitutions or warning against dangers to their faith and their fidelity to the church and by showing his deep concern for the personal welfare of each individual.
